Beachfront Dining at The Duke
If you are looking for a pleasant beachfront dining experience, head down to The Duke’s at the bottom of Soi 51. The restaurant features an old villa home set in expansive grounds.
?The villa is full of character and was originally built as the vacation home for Prince Damrong Rajanubhab, a younger brother of King Rama V.
Diners at The Duke’s can choose to seat themselves in the main building, the first floor of which possesses the most character and offer good sea views, or can opt to enjoy a meal in the garden. With a cooling sea breeze and the sound of waves rolling up the beach, the garden is the most popular spot and it may be worth phoning ahead on the weekends if you want to secure a beachfront table.
What The Duke’s lacks in ambience and decor it makes up for with an extensive menu of Thai and Italian-influenced cuisine and friendly service. Tasty appetizers include a gratin of imported mussels, deep-fried calamari, and thinly sliced salmon with lemon sauce, each dish ideal for sharing and as an accompaniment with a beer or glass of wine. There is also a good choice of soups including minestrone, French onion, and creamed asparagus soup.
For the main meals, if you are opting for Italian dishes the squid ink fet-tuccini with shrimp, broccoli and cream is recommended, as is the spaghetti with baby clams in a white wine sauce. Salads to accompany the pasta dishes or the wide range of pizza available in-
clude mixed salad with mozzarella, ham and black olives, and the classic Caesar salad.
Fish dishes include the tasty snapper fillet with a lime sauce, and the Italian-style grilled mixed seafood - a tempting platter of snapper, squid, tiger prawns and New Zealand mussels. Meat lovers will be more than satisfied by the choice of pepper steak, sirloin steak with red wine sauce, or chicken breast served with mushroom sauce, among others.
A choice of wine is also available to compliment the food.
Service at The Duke’s is friendly, efficient and attentive. With nicely cooked food at a sensible price, and a prime seafront location, it’s a good choice for an evening of casual dining in Hua Hin.
